Referral Services.
The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) referral services usually give you the next lawyer on the list regardless of suitability. That is not what a referral service should do. Be warned. Trust CanLaw for reliable referrals.
The Law Society of Ontario is one of the worst bullies attacking CanLaw because we cost them a huge amount of income from the fees they charged to people seeking referrals.

CanLaw referrals are free and we have never charged for referrals and never will. Beware of the LSO (LSUC).
CanLaw filed a defamation suit against the LSO (LSUC). It was a waste of time. They threatened that if we sued them "WE WILL CRUSH YOU!"
Might Not Right, Prevailed.
Generally when you call a law society referral service, you get the next lawyer on the list based on where you live. Take it or Leave it. They will only give you one name and that even could be a disbarred lawyer who has been reinstated or a lawyer who has stolen vast sums of money or worse. Yes, law societies even reinstate disbarred lawyers.
The Law Society of BC says that law society referrals are a conflict of interest and so did not offer one until recently Strangely they started offering referrals recently despite their belief that it is a conflict of interest.
Other law societies, especially the LAW SOCIETY OF ONTARIO , are not so open.

Ask CanLaw for a Reference Check Before You Hire or Retain a Lawyer in Canada. You need to check the reputation of the law office and lawyers before you provide a retainer to hire any lawyer or paralegal.
There is not much point in asking us after you have hired some lawyer, is there?
You also need to know if there are any complaints against any paralegal or lawyer, any discipline history, or suspension or any bad reviews and if they are in good standing.

When you give money to a lawyer to hold for you for use in a transaction, possibly even the retainer you provide, the lawyer deposits it in a trust account which should earn interest.
That interest belongs to you, no one else, since it was earned on your money.
Ask your lawyer to account for any interest earned on money they are holding for you including retainers and real estate deposits.
The Law Society of Ontario (LSO or LSUC) forces their lawyers to send them the interest earned on client funds held in the lawyers' trust accounts.
That interest money belongs to you, the client, not to the lawyer or the Law Society.
According to LSO (LSUC) accounting, this practice amounts to an average total of some $3 million dollars ($3,000,000.00) a year.
Demand that your lawyer pay your earned interest money to you!
